 Итак, поскольку это первый альбом насколько я понимаю не слишком известной в нашей стране группы (отсутствие рецензий прямое тому подтверждение), вначале небольшой ракурс в историю.
Группу Grim Reaper (переводится, как “мрачный жнец”, т.е. Смерть с косой) относят к «новой волне британского тяжелого метала» (NWOBHM), и в свое время она вместе с Saxon, Diamond Head и, конечно же, Iron Maiden, стремительно подымала популярность своего жанра. Группа была основана в 1979 году в Дройтвиче, Англия, гитаристом Ником Боукоттом, когда к нему присоединились вокалист Стив “Грим” Гримметт и бас-гитарист Дэйв Вонклин. Барабанщики первое время часто менялись, но в остальном состав оставался стабильным. Добившись успеха в родном городе, коллектив сделал прорыв в 1981 году, записав демо «Bleed'em Dry», песня «The Reaper» с которого попала на сборник «Heavy Metal Heroes».
Благодаря великолепному и драйвовому стилю игры Боукотта и хорошо
поставленному яркому вокалу Гримметта, на группу обратил внимание владелец звукозаписывающей компании “Ebony Records”. Именно под флагом этой студии группа всего за четыре дня записала свой дебютный альбом, получивший название «See You in Hell». Альбом тут же получил массу лестных отзывов и был довольно успешен в коммерческом плане, чему также способствовали концертное турне в поддержку пластинки и отснятый на заглавную композицию неплохой клип, который даже пользовался спросом на MTV. К сожалению, несмотря на хорошее начало, будущее у Grim Reaper было не столь светлым и радужным, как им хотелось, и хоть последующие две студийные работы были также на высоком уровне, спрос на группу упал, и через самые разный причины в 1988 году было объявлено о роспуске команды.
Группы больше нет, зато есть их музыка, и есть данный альбом, несправедливо ушедший в андеграунд и забытый любителями старого-доброго метала. На диске у нас имеются 8 достаточно жестких, крепко сбитых, но при этом мелодичных хэви-металических композиций. Лирика песен отдает немного чёрным юмором и оккультизмом, ёё смысл неплохо передает и сама обложка альбома. Техника музыкантов на высоте: большинство групп в то время уже играли с двумя гитаристами, но Ник Боукотт хорошо справляется и в одиночку, успевая радовать слух и неплохими рифами и очень техничными соло-партиями. Бас-гитарист и ударник - тоже парни не промах, но особых похвал заслуживает вокалист Стив “Грим” Гримметт. Его затяжному фальцету в конце заглавной песни позавидовал бы сам Роб Хэлфорд!
Весь альбом напичкан отменными боевиками, никакого занудства или прогрессива - чистый драйвовый ХЭВИ! Единственная песня, которая выделяется из списка - это полубаллада «The Show Must Go On», которую удачно поместили на 7-е предпоследнее место в списке. К слову, это единственная лирическая композиция группы, зато какая! Кто-то скажет, что почти 7 минут для лирической баллады это много, но ведь слушается она на одном дыхании. И, главное, при всей своей душевности и эмоциональности не превращается в банальный или плаксивый трек.
Подводя итог, хочется сказать, что альбом вполне заслуживает и высокого балла и внимания среди любителей олдскульного метала, и жаль, что Grim Reaper так и не смогли до конца раскрыть свой потенциал, выпустив всего три альбома. |
